Terrarium Ventilation: How Much Airflow Your Setup Needs
Stagnant humid air causes more problems than dry air does — airflow is not optional, even in a high-humidity build.

It's easy to focus on hitting a target humidity percentage and forget that the air also needs to move. Humid, stagnant air is one of the more common causes of respiratory and fungal problems — often more so than humidity that's simply a bit low.
Why airflow matters as much as humidity
Moving air prevents moisture from settling permanently on substrate, decor and an animal's skin or scales. A sealed, humid enclosure with no airflow can hit the "right" humidity number on a hygrometer while still being an unhealthy environment, because the air never actually refreshes.
Mesh-top vs vented glass vs sealed fronts
Full mesh lids maximize airflow but make humidity harder to hold — the standard choice for chameleons (see our chameleon guide). Vented glass or PVC panels sit in the middle, giving some airflow while retaining more humidity. Mostly sealed, front-opening builds hold humidity best but rely entirely on small vents for airflow, which needs checking, not assuming.
Matching ventilation to species
Arid species (many geckos, some snakes) generally need more airflow and lower ambient humidity. Tropical bioactive builds (dart frogs, some tree frogs) need enough airflow to avoid stagnation while still holding higher humidity — a balance that's more about vent placement and size than any single ventilation percentage.

Persistent condensation that doesn't clear between mistings, mold or fungus gnats appearing repeatedly, or a musty smell when opening the enclosure are all signs airflow needs increasing — often solved by adding or enlarging vents rather than reducing misting.
Ventilation needs vary by species and enclosure size — this is a general starting point, not a substitute for species-specific husbandry guidance.
