Terrarium Heating: Heat Mats vs Ceramic Heat Emitters vs Basking Bulbs

Three tools that all produce heat, but solve different problems — mixing them up is a common setup mistake.

"Heating" covers more than one job in a terrarium: belly heat for digestion, ambient warmth, and a basking spot that mimics direct sun. Heat mats, ceramic heat emitters and basking bulbs each do one of these better than the others, and most setups only need one or two, not all three.

Heat mats: belly heat from below

An under-tank heat mat warms substrate from beneath, which suits species that absorb heat through their belly, like many geckos and snakes. It doesn't heat the air significantly and provides no light, so it's a poor solution for species that need an overhead basking spot. Always run on a thermostat — an unregulated heat mat is a common cause of burns.

Ceramic heat emitters: heat without light

A ceramic heat emitter (CHE) screws into a standard fixture and radiates heat without producing visible light, which makes it useful for maintaining nighttime temperatures without disrupting a species' day-night cycle the way a lit bulb would. It's a common choice for nocturnal species or overnight ambient heat in cooler climates.

Basking bulbs: heat and light together

A basking bulb combines heat and visible light in one fixture, mimicking direct sun and giving a clear, bright basking spot — the standard choice for diurnal species that bask during the day, like bearded dragons and many chameleons. It should be turned off at night to preserve a normal day-night cycle; use a CHE instead if overnight warmth is needed.

Always pair heat with a thermostat
