Choosing the Right Substrate for Your Terrarium

The base layer decides how well everything above it works.

Substrate isn't just what the enclosure floor is covered in — it sets humidity retention, burrowing ability, and whether a clean-up crew and live plants can actually survive in it. The right choice depends far more on your species' native climate than on what looks best.

Coco fiber / coco coir

A widely used base for tropical setups. Holds humidity well, is easy to spot-clean, and is inexpensive in compressed brick form. On its own it's fairly nutrient-poor for live plants, which is why it's usually blended rather than used alone in bioactive builds.

Sphagnum moss

Excellent at holding and slowly releasing moisture, often layered on top of or mixed into a coco fiber base to boost humidity retention. Long-fiber sphagnum also gives isopods and springtails somewhere to hide near the surface.

Bioactive soil mixes

Pre-made bioactive substrates blend coco fiber, sphagnum, leaf litter, sand and organic topsoil in ratios designed to support live plant roots and a clean-up crew long-term. Sand and clay blends

For arid-adapted species, a sand-clay mix that compacts enough to hold burrows but still drains is standard. Play sand alone is usually discouraged for burrowing species since it collapses easily and doesn't hold tunnel shapes; a small clay or silt fraction fixes this.

What to avoid

Loose, dusty substrates (some walnut shell or fine sand products) can pose an impaction risk for certain species if ingested during feeding, and are generally best avoided for those animals — check a species-specific care sheet before choosing.

Substrate needs vary by species and by climate zone within a species' range — treat this as a starting point, not a substitute for species-specific care information.
